Mental wellness in the LGBTIQ+ community

Queerwell is a South African based and focused NPO that aims to provide access to mental health services to the Youth Queer community with special focus on those in townships and rural areas. To achieve this, the organisation raises donor funding locally and internationally to be able to engage LGBTIQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Questioning and Queer) communities who need these services and also contract professional gender sensitive mental health service providers.

LGBTIQ+ people can be at a higher risk of experiencing a mental health problem than the wider population. More commonly: depression, anxiety, alcohol abuse and suicidal feelings. The reasons for this although not fully understood but will usually be linked to discrimination, bullying, homophobia, transphobia or biphobia.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people ages 10 to 24. LGBTIQ+ youth have been shown to contemplate suicide at least 3 times the rate of heterosexual youth. Access to mental health service for this community is a big challenge in South Africa. Lack of finances, discrimination, prejudice, denial or civil and human rights, harassment and family rejection are still tragically common for people with LGBTIQ+ identities.

Our mission is to host safe spaces for the LGBTIQ+ community to engage and receive support. Linking the community to professional mental health providers. Create awareness about the existence of mental health conditions to the community. We rely on concerned citizens like you to help support our mission to provide services to those in need and promote an environment of mental wellness for the LGBTIQ+ community.

Help us empower individuals to achieve recovery and promote personal and community wellness through an accessible, comprehensive, integrated, and evidence-based system of mental health care.

Queerwell plans to provide charitable mental health care to LGBTIQ+ individuals throughout our community. With your help, more services can be provided for children, adolescents, adults and families seeking help. Your support helps provide:

  • Individual counselling
  • Crisis intervention & Emergency services
  • Suicide prevention services
  • Addiction counseling and recovery services
  • Mental health awareness programs

We will hold fundraising events throughout the year to further support our services, and we welcome you to attend, get involved or simply spread the word. Every cent helps us to continue our efforts to serve LGBTIQ+ individuals in need throughout our community and put them on a path to a happy, healthy life.

Donations made to Queerwell will also be used to provide mental health awareness and outreach services in the LGBTIQ+ community. Whether you are an individual who wishes to support us or an organization choosing to make LGBTIQ+ mental health a charity of choice, you can be sure your donation will be used purposefully to help those in need.

If anybody would like to make a contribution no matter how big or small, they may contact Queerwell on 062 502 9440, or email
