Once again, it’s never about where you come from, your parents, background, your looks nor your height that determines your future…It’s all about YOU and how bad YOU want it! Education is and will remain the ONLY key to alleviate poverty!
I am a living proof, raised by a single parent, somehow my dad didn’t understand why I came 16 years after my sister, so they divorced while she was pregnant with me. I never knew my dad and it never bothered me.
My mom worked as a maid and then as a street vendor but she always preached the importance of education. So much such so, that she refused to attend my Masters graduation in 2015 and said she will only attend my Doctorate graduation … Well three years later, it happened! And as they say, the rest is nitty gritty!
To the youth out there, never allow your background – or whatever you think is the worst – to destruct, distort or destroy what you are destined for! You don’t need a mother to be a teacher to be great…You need your dreams, your goals, tenacity to stay on the course, determination to continue even when it seems impossible. And there will be a lot of sacrifices and a lot of compromises.
Prof Kgethi Phakeng once said to me, ‘Girl, go to the highest level of education until universities start looking for you!’ I took that to heart, and I was, like, I can do this!
