25 September 2019: The inaugural Comic Con Africa in 2018 was such a success that it attracted over 45 000 visitors, 212 exhibitors, and almost 400 media. Not only did it return to an even bigger venue this year, but a major attraction was the highly-anticipated Cosplay Contest on Saturday 21 September at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg.
The word ‘cosplay’ combines costume and play, and references a growing global trend for fans to dress up as their favourite characters from movie franchises and science fiction and fantasy television shows. Comic Con organiser Reed Exhibitions reports that cosplay is becoming increasingly popular in South Africa.
This year’s Comic Con featured a Cosplay Central, a central hub for fans to gather and interact with special guests, as well as show off their own costume creations. Given the amount of time and effort that serious cosplayers often put into their outfits, they are always on the lookout for that special something to give them an edge over the competition.
